To further the Right to Heal Initiative’s goals, IVAW and CCR submitted Freedom of Information Act requests to the U.S. Department of Defense and State Department on September 25, 2014, seeking the firing coordinates of weapons used in Iraq that contained depleted uranium (DU). DU is a byproduct of enriched uranium and is used in armor-piercing weapons due to its high density. Many suspect that exposure to DU is at least partially responsible for the exponential rise in cancer and birth defects among Iraqi civilians and unknown illnesses and health conditions from which U.S. veterans are suffering. Information about the firing coordinates of DU munitions will assist in furthering research about the health effects of DU and other munitions.
